🐾 Fascinating Facts About the Shih Tzu

A Quiet Companion: They were bred to be royal companions, not guard dogs. Their greatest talent? Lying down at the feet of their humans — or on the emperors’ laps.
Almost Extinct: After the Chinese Revolution, the Shih Tzu nearly disappeared. All modern Shih Tzus descend from just 14 surviving dogs (seven males and seven females).
Hair, Not Fur: The Shih Tzu’s hair is more like human hair than typical dog fur. This means less shedding and fewer allergies, but it requires regular grooming.
Button Eyes & Human-Like Faces: Their large, expressive eyes are utterly charming. Many owners say they seem to “look into your soul.”

💡 The Shih Tzu Today

With its affectionate temperament and calm demeanor, the Shih Tzu is one of the most popular dog breeds worldwide. It adapts well to apartments, loves children, and gets along with other pets. It’s the perfect dog for those who want a loyal friend with lots of personality.

The Shih Tzu was specifically bred for the Chinese imperial court around the 7th century. It was a gift from Tibetan monks to the emperors of the Tang Dynasty and became a symbol of status and spiritual protection. For centuries, it was bred exclusively within the imperial palaces. Anyone caught selling or owning a Shih Tzu outside the nobility could be severely punished.
